Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
