The Two Fatalities Named in the Providence Campus Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Manhunt for Gunman.

Two students who were killed in Saturday’s tragic incident in Providence were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter carried on following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the sole person questioned in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

She served as second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Remembering her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”

The Second Victim

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

His name was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

Nine other people were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our community”.

The gunman began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the media outlet.

Police that raided the hotel found two firearms and magazines when the individual was arrested, according to reports.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only in her youth... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his potential.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
